Wrap Rap

“Recycled brown Kraft paper (which can be found in big rolls at your local craft, office supply or dollar store) is a great anytime gift wrap. Tie with twine and embellish with a pinecone and evergreen clippings from your backyard for gift wrap that’s easy on the environment and your wallet.”

This cool idea is from HGTV where you can find more great wrap ideas.  Enjoy!

Wreath as a Centerpiece

Instead of hanging a wreath on your door, use it as the base of a centerpiece for your Christmas table. Use simple decorations to coordinate it with your home decor or tablesetting theme.

Find a large tray or platter, or cut a piece of heavy plastic to place under the wreath. This will make it much easier to move the wreath centerpiece to change the tablecloth or rearrange the place settings. You’ll be protecting the finish on your table at the same time.

Materials for Christmas Wreath Centerpiece

  • fresh pine wreath
  • decorations
  • bow

Follow these simple steps to make your wreath centerpiece:

  • Place the wreath down on the table, tray, or platter.
  • Decorate the wreath by sticking ornaments, pinecones, or floral picks into the wreath.
  • Arrange ribbons or garlands around the wreath.
  • Place one or several colorful bows around the wreath for added color.

Special tips for fine-tuning:

  • Use decorations that have wires attached. They can easily be stuck into the greens of the wreath.
  • When arranging the decorations on the wreath, be careful not to scratch your wood table.
  • For a different look, place several large pillar candles into the center of the wreath.
  • Pile large pine cones neatly into the center of the wreath.
  • Form a pyramid of colorful Christmas balls in the center of the wreath.

You’ll see how simple it is to create this beautiful and traditional Christmas Wreath Centerpiece. (from interiordec.about.com)

Rug on Hold

Cut CAULK the rug!  If you are like me, you detest those awful netting things sold as rug pads.  Mine are always peeking out from the edges and never seem to do the job.

Today’s organizing tip from domestic goddess Martha Stewart recommends this solution:

“To give a sisal or sea-grass area rug some traction, flip it over, and apply lines of acrylic-latex caulk every 6 inches or so. Once dry, you can safely put down your rug; the rubbery strips will hold it in place.”

I can’t wait to try this  – I’ll let you know if it works.  And please let me know if you try it and what you think…

Windows and Grommet

When I introduce myself it is not uncommon to be greeted by “I love HGTV” and I concur. Here is a helpful clip from their website.   Since window treatments can be vexing and expensive, this 3-minute video on grommet panels is fun to watch.  Granted, you see that nice installation guy appearing like magic out of the sidelines!   But the basic idea is there: installing grommet panels is an appealing, fast, and cost-effective way to solve your window problems.

Bed In A Bag

bed in a bag

bed in a bag

It is pretty amazing what you can buy for under $100.  The linen industry is highly competitive, especially in the current economy.  With the demise of Linens ‘n Things stores (they still have an online store) it’s clear that linens have become available almost everywhere and we can find quality goods in discount stores as well as department stores.

The bed pictured is dressed in a bed in a bag, a 7-piece set that gives you all you need to make a statement in your bedroom for very little money.   As you prepare for fall and the chill sets in, why not freshen up your look by replacing those old and tired bed linens.  Need help choosing the right look and color?  Email me anytime.  I would be delighted to answer your questions and assist you in making the right decision.
